Fairy tales have a host of heroines who are no longer secondary characters. In fact in many of the stories, they are the only characters to have names – Snow White, Rapunzel, Goldilocks while the other characters are put to the background and become the wicked stepmother, the handsome prince, the friendly woodcutter. All of which do not have a name. If it were not for Walt Disney, the 7 dwarves would have remained the 7 dwarves and not the Grumpy, Sneezy that we all know today.
But what sort of heroines do we see in fairy tales? A lot of innocent young girls in a tight spot – they often begin with a problem. For example:

- Their parents can’t feed them any more and are abandoned in a dark forest
- A jealous stepmother sends them off to be killed
